Literacy:  This week we started our Regions of Canada centres. Students are doing research and taking jot notes about the 'essential information' of the Interior Plains. They are learning about the climate, landscape, natural resources and industries. During this time, Ms. Sleno is pulling small groups of students to read an article about the region. Grade 4 students are reading about the effects of mountain pine beetles on lodgepole pines and Grade 5 students are reading about efforts to reintroduce bison to Banff National Park After students read with Ms. Sleno, they are filling out their '5 Ws' chart (who, what, where, when and why), 'Making Connections' (text-to-text, text-to-self, text-to-world) and writing down their 'Deep-thinking' questions about the article. We had a special presentation called 'The Fiddle History of Canada' from our educational assistant, Miss Annika. She played a fiddle song from each province of Canada and taught

Math:  Grade 4s are using multiplication charts to practice their multiplication facts. They are also learning the box method for 3 digit by 1 digit multiplication. We will soon start to practice partial product and traditional algorithm. Grade 5s have learned box method, partial product and will soon learn traditional algorithm for 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication and have started working on solving and creating word problems connected to Ann & Sandy Cross. Social Studies/Literacy We have started our second read aloud, Save Me a Seat and are working how to summarize each chapter Students are working on an art piece in their visual journals to represent the Grandfather Teaching they have chosen to guide them throughout the year We have started learning about the regions of Canada. Students will start researching each region to learn about climate, landforms, natural resources and industries Students will be reading articles connected to each region independently and
